Threat Level????

Since no one else has asked then I must expose my ignorance. What was the meaning of this message in my turnsheet:

CACTUS GARDEN ships have had their threat levels in space combat dramatically reduced. --Pete

What is the threat level of my ships? What is the impact of a reduced threat level??????

Threat level has to do with how a ship in combat chooses which enemy ship to fire at. Ships with lots of weapons are going to be viewed by your ships as a bigger threat than an unarmed freighter , or tanker. So your ships will be more likely to target them first. The Flag Bridge ships component really makes use of this to give your ships a better chance of going after those 10 billion ton behemoths instead of spending all their time shooting at the little 1000 ton defense satellites.

I think you are misunderstanding what the new coding is going to do. I don't think that it will prevent your ships from being targetted and blown to space dust. It will just make it less likely that ships with a crapload of weapons will target ships that don't have craploads of weapons and hence are less threatening. So to recap... Let's say empire A with his Nova Flag Dreadnaught of death decides to come a calling on Empire B's pathetic fleet of monitors and cargo ships. Empire A's Dreadnaught will still kill your fleet. It's just that the cargo ships will run a little further before being blown to atoms. I could be wrong but I don't think so. :)

Ok....

So with this turns reduced threat level there is a much better chance

That my enemy might fire on a few hundred of my 1000 ton corvettes and decide NOT to fire on my muti-giga ton dreadnought nova blaster. I get that but what caused this blessed reduction in threat level? What can I do or build to cause this reduction to visit my empire more often?

Let me try and clear this up. My 20B ton ship is now much less likely to target a 1000 ton corvette composed of fuel tanks, cargo etc,

I would suppose it said your ships because you had some sort of design that did not rise to the level of a "real target" so could be ignored during a space battle. If you would care to send me all your ship designs I would be happy to point out which ones are the offenders, :)

I have some wicked corvette designs.....I would say every single one is deadly in their own right , and prone to draw fire upon themselves due to the massive amount of damage they each produce ...and each one of them has a 10th gen weapon mounted !! The only problem is I have robotic shipyards :oops::oops: .

OK.......why happended that caused my ships to be reduced? what should I do to encourage this sort of reduction?

Pete changed the programming. It's not something that you specifically did that turn. It's based on ship design. This was already in place, but Pete reduced it further. Having a Flag Bridge in your fleet allows for more intelligent target selection. Your war ships are more likely to attack other war ships rather than waste fire power on cargo ships or thousands of unarmed cheap screens. Having lots of weapons and a Flag Bridge on a ship make it a more threatening target and more likely to be targeted over ships with no weapons or flag bridge. As others have stated, this does't keep non-threatening ships from being destroyed, it just puts off their destruction until after the more threatening ships have been eliminated.

We don't know the details, so I'm just making up some numbers here for an example. Let's say you have two ships in your fleet; a warship bristling with lots of weapons and an unarmed tanker. My warship comes along and engages you in battle. Before Flag Bridges and these programming changes came along, My firepower was likely to be evenly spread out between your tanker and your warship. In essence, this would allow your warship to survive longer in the battle as the tanker is taking roughly half of the firepower that I can dish out. This scenario is bad for me because it allows your warship to fire at my warship for a longer period of time. Now, let's say I have a Flag Bridge on my warship. This allows for more intelligent targeting based on the threat level of the targets. Let's say there is now only a 10% chance that the tanker will attract my firepower. This allows me to kill your warship much quicker because more of my firepower will be targeted at your warship with only 10% being wasted on your tanker. Once your warship is destroyed, if the tanker is the only ship you have left, no matter it's threat level, it will get 100% of my firepower. With this recent further "drastic reduction" in threat level, Pete has done something in the programming to reduce even further the chance of the tanker being targeted; maybe something like down to 1%. Even so, once I destroy your warship, 100% of my firepower will then go to the tanker. Again, I'm just making up numbers and a scenario, but you get the idea.

Well, it's not really reduced threat level across the board. It just makes it so that your firepower won't be wasted against targets that were already only minimally or totally non-threatening. This does tend to give extra protection to unarmed tankers, but they'll die eventually if they lose their escorts, so in the end it's just a matter of order-of-destruction. Construction of huge swarms of useless ships just to try to abuse the combat system has negative effects on the database, so it's necessary to try to discourage such things.
