General Miles Avatar
Actually they do have a use. They would be added to your army to add some ground combat tactical ratings I use them in Andromeda and I'm sure if they are still with us in Draco they will be of use

Landmine
Planetary Fortress or Orbital fortress???? Â Could someone please elaborate on the functions and purposes of these two items? Â which one (or both) will engage enemy ships when they move to my homeworld? Â which one (or both) engage the enemy in battle when they unload some ground troops on my homeworld?? Â Will a planetary fortress help in ground combat at all??? Â Â
Drago
These are both considered just like ships. They will engage enemy warships. The major difference is orbitals have a 3x multiplier and can be towed. The Ground based ones have a 9x multiplier and can not be moved at all. Neither will assist in ground combat. Glamdring
Drago.....that is interesting. Given the inherent strength of the ground based fortress, why would anyone build an orbital fortress? Surely, the orbital version must have some advantage that makes its weaker strength be a good investment??
Landmine
I guess that towing a orbital fortress to a Warp Point would be the only value to building them. If you are going tho leave them at a planet you might as well have a planatary fortress, right?
Magus666
Generally, yes, Orbitals are also good if you have some small in-system colonies that you want to protect that are too small to have their own shipyards, or only small, limited shipyard space. Then you can build your defenses at the HW or larger colony and tow them to the small ones.
Drago
I make orbitals and tow them to the warp point. That way my entire waiting fleet can engage the enemy fleet piecemeal. They will come in a few at a time and I will be firing with my entire fleet. If you wait until they reach your homeworld, they will have their full fleet as well. General Miles Avatar
Yes Orbitals are best used to 'blockade' the entry warp point of a system you want to defend. They are really nice if the system has only has 1 warp point going in. You could concievably make the system impregnable by towing enough of them to the entry point to completely overwhelm any ships trying to make transit under combat conditions. The large ships trying to make transit need to have very small warp bubbles or they will come in piece meal and get torn to shreds and if the warp point on the other side is of very small size then the the only other option is a MASSIVE gunboat/drone warp point assault so don't forget to put plenty of fighter bays and drone racks of your own on your Orbitals or PLENTY of CIDS systems.
