I think its awesome to see the game grow. We have some new faces it seems every cycle which absolutely rocks

However, a few familiar voices have sort of vanished -- or are you guys just hiding?

I hope the case is that the old faces are in hibernation rather than gone.

Just wondered if anybody else has noticed that some of our more reliable board friends have been quiet!

Speaking only for myself, I can say that I am still here though maintaining a low profile these days since this board unfortunately developed into a propoganda tool in recent months. It gets old being the target of every ^%$@!# who thinks that humor at your expense, day in and day out, is entertaining.

On top of that you have players who create new positions, pretend to be newbies, and try to gain your confidence and information through infiltration. Is this still SOP in PBM these days? Seems to be.. and chalk me up as one who thinks it is cowardly, immature and a destructive element to the PBM medium. But the children who operate thusly are too selfish to understand anything beyond their own desire to destroy the fun of others. I liken this to the online gaming community where the horde of 13 year olds running around PK'ing everything in sight and driving away those who detest such. Whatever..

Those who have a need to contact me can do so as always. I am always willing to participate in positive discussions and interactions, just dont have the time or energy for bullsh!t anymore.

I have not been on the boards since my recent thread on public bugs forum which was left unanswered by those it actually concerned and since I was again seen as overly critical vs RTG I just don't believe I have anything constructive to add right now, so I just don't bother with the boards anymore and am rethinking my whole commitment to the game. I still keep my correspondence with those I am in contact with though as they are what has kept me in the game.

The GGT entered into BOB space and formally acknowledge that the systems so entered are BOB Sovereignity and acknowledge the peaceful and respectful intent of BOB and the construction of a diplomatic mission between the GGT and BOB...

Sorry Lord Valwyn, I think you are wrong on this. Dealing with and controlling information is part of every strategy game I have ever played. Spying in most games is abstracted, SN3 even looks to provide in game spying via agents, even if I don't know how to use them. Discovering some vital tech in a hidden tree can have huge ramifications. This is such a slow research game, it can take much longer to recover from a minor allocation error. Example) Finding out on turn 25 that I really should have been researching Improved Fuel even though none of my tech needed it at the time. No one can research everything, and there is this nagging fear that perhaps I might miss some strategic game altering tech.

My view of SN3 is that at its core it is about dominating the galaxy/space, whatever. Yeah, others may play it from an RPG, community or builder view, but they have to spend some effort in protecting their own. There isn't some gentlemans agreement that everyone is playing co-operatively in this game, if there were then "PKers" would indeed suck. Infiltrators/spies are a different matter. Keeping tabs on the other guys who are trying for power or gathering tech information is completely appropriate. People should be wary of accepting members into alliances, verifications need to be made. Does that mean someone may still slip into a group? Most assuredly, but I think that balances out those who are willing to run multiple positions or send in tons of orders each cycle with those who don't. I also think you would see less spying/infiltration if the tech trees weren't hidden.

Mu-Rhu-Mu is still around. However the Sigma-Tao ran into some serious economic problems and where abandoned by their glorious leader. Yes, that means that I dropped them and started a new. Like everyone else I've been swamped and always seem to forget to update the boards.

I have always found you a wonderful asset to the game and have paid scant attention to the pandantic bantering on the boards. I wish that the Tao and done better so we might have met in space. Of course who know, my new empire, while on the fringes of the universie might someday make it to the core systems where we might meet.

I'm not so delusional as to think that there has ever been a Gentlemen's Agreement to make nice-nice throughout the known universe, after all, SN:ROTE was (and is) advertised as a wargame, so there are bound to be players out there itching to get into a conflict with someone, or something, else. Go ahead on with their bad selves! I also appreciate the players who want to 'role-play' their empires. What I do not appreciate in SN:ROTE, or any other PBM/PBeM, are the people who use pseudonyms to (as one of my co-workers would say) 'Act da Ass'. Has it stopped me from playing PBM/PBeMs as a whole? No. But I have dropped out of games when the infantile punk sector of the populace got too large. I don't think you'll ever be rid of such folk because of the degree of anonymity that exists in these games (especially PB-e-Ms). Just like there will always be philanderers in chat rooms trying to make the 'pick up' amongst the single folk.

As for the online game analogy to SNROTE etc........

I expect a certain level of immaturity in all games and don't mind dropping my daily formalities to delve into such entertaining pursuits (read: I like to be a dufus from time to time, no shame in that.) The only thing that really ever bothers me is when someone appears to completely assimilate their success in the game with their entire ego.

I dont mind competitive play.
'Roleplaying' is always appreciated.
"Alts" or "pseudos" are fine and expected
Smack-talk is MORE than welcome
Even "d3wd"-speak and 'griefing' don't rattle me too bad.....

I can ignore all that.

What is HARD to ignore is the powergamer type who overlooks the fact that the game is just a game.....and radiates this strange aura of toxic self-glorification when achieving virtual victory. <---- this is the only type of player I tend to gravitate away from - and end up irritating the most. The power of "/ignore" is all-mighty when dealing with such people: I don't accomodate them by leaving and I don't acknowlede their existence. Why?

The illusion eventually fades and the powergamer is left with the same hollow shell he/she sought to fill through the game at the outset.

Summation: As long as I'm having F-U-N and ignore the jerks, I have a good time.

As a whole, I'd say that we fare well against my little subjective measuring stick of board politicking.

My comments were not in reference to "in-game" activities such as agents on espionage missions. In fact I find that aspect of play to be very intriguing and look forward to hearing how it all works. I was specifically referring to "out-of-game" practices. There is also, I believe, a line that eventually one must reach when pushing the boundaries of behavior, even in a game. My point might be better summized as "I am disappointed that I reach that line before so many others".

On the other hand, I have come to know many players in the game to date and very much appreciate the friendships developed here, many of which will hopefully last beyond the lifetime of the game. It is to those honorable gentleman, from many countries, states, or cities, who still compete to win, but not at the *any* cost, that I hereby salute. This goes as well for those I may not have met yet but who still seek to win the old fashioned way.. by earning it.
