SRPs and Part Researched Items

Just wanted to check something. I have been researching a 3rd Generation item and have now realised I will need it sooner than I thought...

The "standard" research period for the item is 24 turns so if I have been researching for 10 turns already how much will the item cost me when I "slot 1" it?

(1) 14 SRPs

(2) about 12 SRPs (24 less 10 turns research including a research bonus)

(3) about 10 SRPS (remaining 12 SRPs less a research bonus)

(4) 24 SRPs (previous research is disregarded!)

I think the answer is (2), really hope its not (4) :D

:nuke: As I understood the process, if you had a human standard race with no bonus for intellegence, senses, or long life, on turn 1 you slot on a 12 point item it will be completed by using 11 of your SRP.

I am calling the set up turn zero, so if you picked one of the original items this number would not be correct.

A deeper question would be if you were a "brainiac" race with a big bonus such as 50%, would you use 10.5 SRP?

Not sure if rounding is involved, after all I'm just a looker

We're pretty sure that many moons ago we were told on the old board that SRPs are not subject to any Research Bonus (which, when you think about it is perfectly logical). Thus, in the previous example, a race with a 50% bonus would get 1.5 RCPoints for the RC in Slot one and then 11 more SRPs would be spent to achieve the 12 RCPoint tech.

Therefore, if you want to spend your SRPs really wisely, you want to work out a method of calculating research expenditure to whole numbers, as we're fairly sure that SRPs aren't spent in fractions - but you never know...... :nuke:

Does this mean that if you have partially researched an item, you still pay the full research cost on the item?

If no, how many SRPs are spent for a partially researched item?

No. As above, with a 12 RCPoint item, if you have a race with an RB of 20%, then after 4 turns of 1RC per turn, then you would have accumulated 4 x 1.20 = 4.8 RCPs. This would mean that you would get a futher 1.2 RCPs with the turn you 'Slot 1'nd' the item, leaving 6 SRPs needed to be used to complete the research....

So, no, you'll use only the number of SRPs needed to complete the research.

As far as we understand it, the research process is run and then SRPs are applied (provided you have any and the system has begun by you having issued an SRP order) to Slot 1 if it that item is 'buyable'. If not, then down the list of RCs until it finds one that can be bought.....

Emphasize that "you'll use only the number of SRPs needed to complete the research". That means if with your reasearch and bonuses, you've put in 7.46 points into an item requiring 12, that you would use 4.54 points of SRP to complete it. IE ... everything relating to research is tracked to many decimal places in the system. And that includes the SRP usage. So you never lose SRP.

Are you sure that SRPs are stored at the fractional level (as opposed to being rounded up) or is this an assumption?

If you are indeed correct the problem in working out exactly how many SRPs you have left spent depends on knowing your research bonus to some degree of accuracy. For example, you might assume that your race has a 20% bonus (as they get 12 turn items in 10 turns), whilst their actual bonus may be 23%.

Saved SRP's are not stored with fractions, but earned SRP's toward an item (via regular research, for instance) are. If you have completed 10.46 points toward a 12 point item and assign 1 research center to that item and slot 1 it (supposing that you have no bonuses or penalties to research) you would have earned 11.46 points and still need another 0.54 points. If you have saved points, 1 point would be expended to complete it, assuming of course it's an item that can accept saved points (most 12 point items can).
