Space Combat: Bugs or Illumination?

Greetings, All!

 

Got a very odd battle report, which I have posted below. I included the movement order and sighting that triggered the battle, so that you could see that this was not a standard warp point defense. It was at a warp point, but I MOVEd in, rather than WARPed.

 

Executive summary:

* He had 55 light screens in his fleet, totalling about 100,000 tons. My fleet was about 2,000,000 tons, mixed cruisers with heavy screening, plus about 3,000 fighters.

* He had 17 fire control. I had a base of 1, plus leader support.

* I won the battle, but not before he inflicted more than twice as many casualties amoung my screens.

 

The odd part is, that I did not influct ANY casualties on him until the third round of combat!!! :)

In order for this to happen, two things had to be true:

1) The vast majority of my ships did not open fire until at least the third round.

2) My fighters did not launch until at least the third round (if at all!)

Your fleet had a fire control of 7 (Vice Admiral = 4, square root of all naval officers is square root of 4 = 2, 4+2 = 6 naval officer bonus + 1 base = 7).

 

What I find interesting in this battle is, it appears as if multiple rounds of weapons fire occurred before results were tabulated. Why do I say this?

 

Well, assuming the number displayed (1st, 2nd, 3rd, .. 56th...) is the order in which ships died (which has worked for my battles), then look at the enemy fleet. They lost ships 57th through 77th, or 21 ships .. with no intervening losses listed for you. Since with your firepower you will destroy 7 screens per round of fire, that is three rounds. So it's almost like three rounds of fire for both sides. Then there is another big gap, jumping from 77 to 129 on the enemy ships, then displaying 30 destroyed enemy ships in a row on that side. Very strange in the displays

 

I'm not certain why the destroys are displaying they way they are. But, your screens took a drubbing like they should have. Figure it this way. The enemy has 17 fire control, 55 ships, total firepower of around 415,000 .. or an average of about 7500 per ship. You can only destroy 7 ships per round .. so that's 8 rounds of fighting. Your screen ships have 2200 or less integrity. By whittling away 7 ships per round, the enemy fire pulse (firepower / fire control) would (in theory) still destroy screen ships every single pulse (even in the last round), not taking into account defenses items, defense for distances, or fire lost firing on the big ships through random chance. So you should have lost up to (worse case) 17 * 8 rounds = 136 screen ships for his 55. Results -- You lost 114 ships (and 79 ships damaged?? Tell me, did you come into this battle with lots of ships with bits of damage?). The only reaon you did not lose more is, it is likely some of the random shots got targetted to the big ships .. whose shields easily absorbed the blows resulting in no damage listing on those ships.

 

Overall to me, despite the bizarre displays of who went when to the great beyond, it appears you lost ships like you should have. What else would you have expected taking on someone dishing our 17 globs of 20,000 points of firepower / damage per round to start, while you can dish back only 7 (very large globs of course).

Oh, I expected to get much worse than I gave in this situation. I concur with that part of your analysis. In fact, on the whole, I agree with you, with two exceptions.

 

First, I do not brush asside the fact that the results show more than two dozen of my ships being destroyed before I inflict my first loss. The idea of "well, those numbers reflect the order of destruction... in every battle we have seen but this one," just does not wash.

 

Second, you state that he should have been able to destroy 17 ships per turn every round, including the last. I believe this to be false. That would imply that 3 to 7 of his ships would have enough firepower to destroy 17 of my ships. For this, you would have to assume that each point of firepower is sufficient to destroy one (or more) points of integrety. My analysis, from previous battles, is that it takes somewhere between 2 to 4 points of weapons fire to destroy 1 integrety.

 

This is born out by the very large number of damaged picket ships I got in the battle. Entering the fight, I had VERY FEW, lightly damaged pickets.

 

However, if you assumes several hits to each point of integrety, and assume that my ships could not fire for the first two rounds, it all works out as presented. After I knock out a few of his ships, he no longer has the firepower for outright kills on any but my smallest screens. Hence, I get several rounds of ananswered kills while he gets partial damage on many of my ships. As the partial damage builds up on more and more of my ships, I start taking losses again.

 

At least that is how I interpret the printout.

This would explain why there are so many damaged ships and why it appears that it took two rounds before IDE ships fired. They were actually firing every round but due to the lower firepower per ship they were only damaging ships while the Phoenix Empire was knocking out screens with each round.

 

By the way I only see one Naval officer, a Vice Admiral so I come to the conclusion that IDE only had a FC of 5, not 7.

I am not sure that I follow your logic, Ali-t-akua. While Pheonix' screens did have nice firepower for their size, I had the MUCH larger fleet, with MUCH greater total firepower. And what about my 3000 fighters? The mass of my fighters alone outweighed his entire force by a factor of about three. Further, Pete has stated on several occasions that each individual "blob" of fire is independantly targeted, and that they do not fire at already dead ships. Buttom line, if there are no bugs at work here, I had far greater firepower focused on far fewer ships of similar size to those Pheonix was targeting. Yet my screens were being destroyed, while his were not. Well, at least not for the first few rounds, they were not.

Looking at the post and example from Russ:

 

Fire Control Bonus = Highest Rank Level + Square Root of cumulative rank levels

 

Example:

You have a Rear Admiral (Rank 3) and a Senior Captain (Rank 1) present. The highest rank is 3 and the cumulative rank level is 4. The Fire Control bonus for naval officers is 5 (3 + Square Root of 4).

 

Using this example, his fleet had one Vice Admiral with Rank Level 4

 

So, Highest Rank Level = 4

 

Cumulative Rank Levels = Vice Admiral (4) (notice how the Cumulative listing includes the Read Admiral .. even though he is highest rank. The same must apply here).

 

Square Root of Cumulative Rank = Square Root (4) = 2

 

So Highest + Square Root = 4 + 2 = 6 for the Fire Control Bonus for naval officers.

 

 

As for firing on ships, Pete described it answering a series of emails (and hopefully my summary here is correct). Each Pulse (or Glob) of fire is targetted randomly on a ship in the enemy fleet. Basically the program selects one ship randomly, then selects a different ship, compares the two, and fires on the more "interesting" ship (I'm nor sure what is interesting, my guess is size). This is done for every single pulse (glob) fired. Hence there is no targetting and locking on. Just random shooting. Ships in Deploy location 1 have a higher chance to be fired on, followed by decreasing odds for 2 through 12. This is why screens are so effective. Multiple small targets skew the odds away from bigger ships being hit through sheer numbers. Place the screens in Deploy location 1 and bigger ships back in 2 (or further back), and the chance to fire on the bigger ships drops even further.

 

 

As to the who dropped dead when, I would like to hear from Pete on this. I fights happen in rounds with one fire phase per round, then we should have seen a back and forth of dead ships. Instead we see what appears to be multiple fire phases by one force, then multiple return fires by the other .. back and forth.

 

Also, just HOW MUCH firepower is needed to damage one integrity point anyway.

What tactic were they on?

 

If it was 'Cover', then we are currently assuming that this implies that all fighters are on Combat Space Patrol (CSP) and thus wouldn't attack the enemy ships at all...

 

Also of interest would be any comment on whether they were all still left at the end of the battle.

I hadn't noticed. Strange how the ships had 30 Fighter Bays and 1 Drone Rack .. and the computer program allowed 3100 different fighters to be loaded. It seems the all powerful computer doesn't know the difference between a fighter and a drone.

 

Or maybe they simply discovered how to velcro 100 fighters to the side of the ship, for a little extra fire power.... :laugh:

Probably the same way you can get more cargo/colonists carried then ships should allow. Namely scrap one or have it destroyed in battle, anything the fleet was carrying will still be carried even if its strictly no longer legal to do so. I would however expect fighters/drones carried to be re-calculated at the end of a battle, so its more likely he just scraped something with 1 fighter bay.

My logic is that if there is a certain randomness to how ships are targeted and even with your firepower you are not able to destroy the screens in one round it is possible that if your opponent is he may inflict damage prior to you. In the end of course your superior weaponry and mass should (and did) win but you may suffer some casualties along the way.

 

Also, ULT's point about the fighter orders is a good one. This may explain why your fighters failed to impact the battle much.

The 2 comes from the Vice Admiral. The Vice Admiral has a rank value of 4. The cumulative value of all naval ranks is .. 4 (you get to add in the Vice Admiral). The square root of 4 is 2. So, the Vice Admiral has a value of 4 (Highest rank) + 2 (Square root of Cumulative Ranks) = 6.

 

The example formula from Russ clearly shows that the Highest ranking naval officer does get included in the cumulative calculation. Just because there is only one naval officer present, does not mean the cumulative calc portion is skipped. So strange as it may seem, the Vice Admiral all by his lonsome has a value of 6 (4 + 2 for the square root of cumulative). Or have I missed something in the Legendary Officers thread?

I think a few extra rounds of destroyed fighters would be entirely appropriate. :D
