Roman High Command is currently sequestered behind closed doors and refuses to comment. GNN reporters learned from a cabinet member that the Roman Shai Fleet last reported contact with a "large enemy force" upon which all communications were cut off. Attempts to contact Admiral Constantine, commander of Shai System forces, have so far been futile. GNN reporters further obtained eye witness reports from a commerical transport captain about a battle in the Roman home system. The anonymous captain reported that he saw the Roman Orbital Command open fire at a large vessel that transitted into Ovitrigailo System without clearance. "It had to be an enemy warship...I've been plying the stars for a long time and have never seen such a design." Roman High Command has been examining the wreckage and initial reports are that the vessel belonged to the hated Go'ald, the same enemy that made it to the very gates of the Roman homeworld several months ago. The Roman homeworld is extremely tense at this time and the public is buying up large stocks of supplies at many consumer markets. Justinian Posted June 4, 2005 Report Share Posted June 4, 2005 Gone are the days of weak screen ships. 500 rounds of battle on this one folks: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> OOC, Pete's attached text to battle: A massive battle erupts when Roman Empire warships open fire on several intruding alien vessels (GM Note - War declaration trigger off of Romeo ROE). The Eyre and Go'ald ships prove to be massive behemoths, virtually impregnable and bristling with weapons, but the Roman crewman, veterans of countless engagements, showed no fear of what they had to know was certain death. Suffering massive point defense fire and a spectacular dogfight, thousands of fighters, gunboats and bombers on both sides were swept away into the great furnace. Soon there were no fighters left and the mighty gunships duked it out with their onboard weaponry. In the end there was little left but a mass of floating wreckage and burning debris. The Eyre and Go'ald ships emerged victorious but badly damaged and without any of their fighters. MMB, you're back! Does this mean you've decided to stay? You just couldn't fade away, could you. I kind of thought you had to be hiding back there behind the lines building something rather large And you were! Of course, the 5:1 tonnage ratio in MMB's favour is purely co-incidental. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Actually it would have worked had the defenders had more firepower. Those of you with hundreds of screens dont fret. Build your self a couple of really big monster ships like the ones that attacked in this battle surround them with screens. The problem is if your weapons tech is wanting then you will be hard pressed to build up enough Firepower to put a dent in ships with millions of tons of high-grade armor. In this case, size does matter. This battle has me reconsidering about investing into larger and faster screening ships... When technology permits. Where did this battle took place? If the masses of the two fleets were more even, the outcome might have been different. On the other hand, you have to give credit where its due, MMB certainly provided an example of a strategy for countering large numbers of screen ship by building some very large ships that could take a pounding and give a pounding back.. The invading ships had integrity in the hundreds of millions... A surface fortress with about the same amount of armor... I cant even imagine the firepower required to kill that thing. If you have a fleet with JUST screens, how can you hope to damage the enemy? Not to belabor the obvious..... 1) screens buy your screened warships invaluable rounds of time 2) screens without supporting ships are useless The true advantage to screens: resource effectiveness. The screen strategy is far from dead for those of us that value resource efficiency In other words - if you told me the composition of that fleet beforehand, I could utilize screens and build a ship with FAR less resources used to build the invading fleet. (This was the real point of my discussion with Pete long ago...not that screens PWN all) EDIT: assuming the tech level of the invading force wasn't vastly superior than mine The Gjor'haan/Collectors battle posted earlier must have involved a situation where the defending Gjor'haan ships had enough firepower to overcome the integrity of the Collector's fleet. The screens were probably useful in buying the defending ships a few rounds of 'free shots' at the invading ship. I would love to see a tonnage comparison posted. If the Romans are wise, they'll build screens for their next fight again....and put a massive ship with enough firepower to eat away at the invading fleet. Simple formula: (Integrity of the Invading Fleet) DIVIDED BY (number of screen ships/invaders fire control) EQUALS Firepower you need for your non-screen vessels. Add up the resources used to build each fleet, and voila...you will see the 'omniefficient' character of screens resurrected Of course those high-powered computer systems will erase this...but by my spreadsheet, its a LONG way off. EDIT: This underscores anotehr point brought up by others about technology -- superior technology allows you greater efficiency in ship design. There's that 'efficiency' word again.
