Now, however, as we're looking at it - what does have me vexed is the whole idea of a SHIP in one turn order - but it's not just SN that has done this!

The fact that a 1 billion ton ship can be built in the same time as a 1,000 ton ship! jawdrop.gif

That's just plain silly. For my part - I'd rather each Shipyard Slip had a tonnage limit - something like 1,000,000 tons per turn - so a 9m DN would take 9 turns to build........

I think of the Shipyard capacity workers and equipment as the men (and wonmen) and equipment to put together the ship and the slips as the final assembly point. An analogy to this is an aircraft manufacturer like Boeing and Airbus. everything is built by subcontractors in modules and then the modules are assembled at the final assembly point. I will have to check but I don't think it takes much more time to build a 747 than a 737. It is a matter of logistics planning. Therefore while the fact that a 1 Billion T ship takes as long as a 1k T ship is a simplification, it does not disturb me much. Besides the capacity to build a 1 Billion T ship in a turn requires a heck of a lot of CM.

Are you taking Shipyards or Shipyard Slips?

Shipyards have a tonnage capacity.

Shipyard Slips also have a capacity, 1 Ship.

You can assemble a billion ton ship if you have the right number of Shipyards.

I agree with Ali-t-akua on this issue. Slips are more like final assembly areas, which can 'flex' based on the size of the ship you are building.

FWIW,

-SK :)

I was referring to Shipyards.

Also, I am getting nervous as I think this is twice that we have agreed on something. :drunk:

Typical ships of the line in SNROTE are a few million tons. Some battles published on the boards exhibited ships on the order of ten million tons.

There is no theoretical limit to ship size. But keep in mind that a typical home world, if it really put its mind to it, could produce somthing upwards of of 750,000 tons of ship equipment per turn. That is, of course, if it dedicated almost all of its production capacity to ship production, rather than CM, or troops, or anything else. And that would be TOTAL ship production, including explorers, freighters, colony ships, transports, tankers, pickets, etc.

As a practical matter, a homeworld on a war time footing could expect to produce better than a half a million tons of war ships per turn. So those 10M ton warships mentioned earlier represent up to a 20 turn production effort.

I think your assumptions are valid for a starting position but for an empire that is three to four years old and has put some of its research into Industrial techs, they could reduce that to around ten turns by increasing production capacity by 50% and developing a few colonies. Production capacity could be increased by getting 3G Ind Tech and converting a third of the ICs to IICs. (Thats converting between 250 and 400 ICs to IICs each turn which requires 125k to 200k ICMs.) A more aggressive empire could make that heppen sooner. So I can see 10 T ships being a more regular occurrence in the coming months as we are nearing four years.

All true, and very good points, indeed! Also, those empires that capture an additional home world or ten can significantly boost their warship production.

I was just trying to give Magus a ballpark estimate of what kinds of warships one might typically see, over the entire spectrum of possitions out there. "Typically" being the operative word. Your mileage may, as they say, vary.

Even one HW more can significantly increase the size of what you build. IN THEORY, you could set-up a convoy route between HW 1 and HW 2 (assuming the space is secure and patrolled). HW 1 builds say, Transwarp Drives, Engines, and Fuel Tanks. HW 2 build Weapons, Fire Control items, Defenses, and odds and ends to flush out the design (like more fuel tanks, maybe). HW 1 builds a ship consisting of a TWD, a large pile of Fuel Tanks, and a whole heap of advanced engines to give a high AP (say, oh, 14+). Just load up the fuel, add it to the convoy route, and *zap* next turn it's sitting at HW 2. Then you scrap the ship, and reuse all the parts the next turn (along with the wonderful weapons, defenses, and the like) to build a really nice, big, ship, very quickly and cleanly combining the output of two HW's into one monster. Once you get the route going, along with 3rd or 4th Gen Industrial Science, along with colonial transports feeding materials into the maws from colonies in each system .. why the size of ships can literally explode.

In Theory....

Can we ask how the theory works in practice? <wink, wink> <nudge, nudge>

In theory, of course.

In Theory, if you cruch the numbers right, do good planning, and set it up all right (including leaving room for Improved HM and CM), it works well. Oh sure, some critics warn mistakes might hurt. They will drone on and on about this is too risky, you may miscalculate the engines needed on a warship by neglecting to take into account fuel tanks ... or argue that if you could screw up a *^%$ fuel transport from a gas giant by mistyping a few minor fleet numbers when upgrading a tanker, resulting in a convoy that leaves without enough fuel and gets stuck in the middle of nowhere. And they warn if you make one mistake, boy does it take time and orders to correct for it. Blah, blah, blah.

As for me, I would (in theory) simply toss the critics out the airlock, and adjust all the paperwork so nothing shows up in the audits. So of course, everything would look (in theory) as it worked perfectly. Of course you would need the extra HW to test out your theory. But that would mean you'd have to battle someone and destroy the fleets over their HW, so you could land and take it. Anyone with one of these mythical second HW's would probably have boasted about it. For example, you would probably see something like this posted as the enemy home forces were destroyed.

Of course, this is all theory.

Very nice theory. Thanks for sharing all your theoretical problems with skeptics. But don't all those airlock exits pose a navigation problem? Perhaps they could be gunnery practice targets?

In theory, of course.

I thought they became gunnery practice targets after they were expeled from the airlock.
