No real point in builting fast, more than 2, AP colony ships until you have Jump Drives that allow you to make multiple jumps in a turn. Following a successful warp jump with standard jump drives your ship's action points (APs) drop to zero, so once you've jumped that ship is done for the turn. Thus you can Load Cargo onto your ship, Move it to the Warp Point, Warp through the Warp Point and then it has to wait to the next turn to move again. (Load Cargo and Offload Cargo are both 'free' actions - they cost zero APs.) Once you get them built you'll need to look into Convoy Routes, so that your Colony ships can go into a continuous loop from your Homeworld to your Colony, automatically, every turn.
