TheCollectors
It is time… *transmit* Thus the orders for the second assault of Chadwik 10 are irrevocably sent through the nether toward the waiting fleets. All that could be done has been done to rectify the failings of the past. Selenite has been replaced with Vananite, Shaker Beams with Phase Shakers. The new Cage is now accompanied by escorts so numerous that they warrant their own fleet structure; The Thousand Voices. Time for planning, for preparation, is past. In the waiting there is anticipation. And recollection... -Star Map- Cycle 16: First contact is made with The Fury of Gjor'haan in the Kostis system at the near warp point. Great Eye 102 1 FS Eye of Gjojaol (Fleet Scout - 12,100 tons) 1 FS Eye of Gjojaol II (Fleet Scout - 12,000 tons) 'Blazing Fist Rising From Cauldron Of Blood'… this emblem immediately suggests that this new alien species has aggressive tendencies. The spotting Collector ships are two unarmed Star Springer class Fleet Scouts which weigh in at only 10,000 tons apiece. A widebeam transmission is heard: I, Gjor'haan, called as a disciple of Gjo'jaol, Darkness of Darkness, and Shor'ha, his servant; to The Collectors, to those that have been sanctified in Darkness, disciples by calling, with all who in every place call upon Gjo'jaol for strength, yield the following: Tr’laa, the great dog of Shor’ja returns from the journey to the hidden sun. She gently carries a Golden Acorn between her jaws. She gathers trinkets from the darkest plumes of evening black; collecting those who Collect. Will we loose Tr’laa to gather more? That depends. Swear fealty to Gjo'jaol, and be spared. There can be no mistake- the emblem of the Collectors is the Golden Acorn. Quarantine procedures are ordered to immediately be put in place. With prejudice. Cycle 17: Both Fury ships warp through into the far side of the Kolovei system and are spotted by three more Star Springer mapping ships. The intentions of the alien vessels are clear; locate the homeworld of the Collectors. But it shall not be allowed to pass. The tables will not be turned, the hunter will not become the hunted. Cycle 18: The Fury ships must pause to scan the system before being able to move on. There are also eleven orbits in Kolovei which may attract attention. To prevent further penetration into Collector space, all available ships in the area are amassed at the far Kolovei warp point. Unfortunately the newest ships in the area are six unarmed Nebula Springer II class Fleet Scouts which were headed to the periphery to pick up mapping where the earlier Star Springers are unable to progress. But wait! Almost overlooked are the four pathfinders in Kolovei surveying planets. The Pathfinders are ordered to Whiskey and move to the warp point. Cycle 19: Splitting up, only one Eye attempts to survey the near warp point. It is destroyed by the Pathfinders! The other Eye disappears somewhere into the system. Two pathfinders will remain at the warp point while the other two chase down and blind the second eye. It will take four more cycles to complete this task. TheCollectors
Cycle 20: Although not fully aware of it at the time, the Collector’s science directors were making decisions that would have lasting consequences in the coming conflict. The order of Alpha priority (slot 1 SRP purchase) had been as follows: 1) 1st Gen Psychology 2) 1st Gen Civil Administration 3) 2nd Gen Computer Systems 4) 2nd Gen Industrial Science 5) Mk II Jump Survey Sensors 6) 2nd Gen Space Science 7) 3rd Gen Space Science 8) Mk III Jump Survey Sensors 9) Mk IV Jump Survey Sensors 10) Mk I Force Shield 11) 2nd Gen Psychology 12) 2nd Gen Civil Administration 13) 3rd Gen Computer Systems 14) 3rd Gen Industrial Science 15) Light Pressor Beam 16) Light Shaker Beam -First Contact- 17) Mk II Force Shield 18) Mk III Force Shield 19) Selenite Battle Weave 20) Mk II Fusion Engines -SRPs Expended- The initial technology foundation was based on two principles; in order to collect you must first find, and then of course have the war materials in sufficient quantity to act. Certainly these are two sound principles but in hindsight perhaps not the best priorities with an imminent hostile contact so early. Advanced Jump Sensors are not needed to find something so easily found, while industrial investments are long term ones. But beyond the unexpected early contact there was needless redundancy in the standard research queue. No less than three fire control systems were being developed; Mk II Computer, Battle Imaging System, and Laser Communication Gear. To make matters worse, only one is not a dead end on the tech tree and that one was not immediately selected for further research. Military technologies had always been intended to be of high priority. The focus was shifting in that direction just before initial contact with the Fury. But the depth of the tech tree was not leveraged as well as it could have been in some cases. Light Shaker Beams are a “good” weapon system and represent the best available for jumpstarting development. Light Phase Shaker’s were immediately queued up as a successor. But Engines and Force shields were not as sound a decision as Cordellium Armor would have been. Armor is more efficient than Force Shields in regards to integrity per unit of production. And Engines are not effective on warships till deeper in the tech tree when high mobility is relatively inexpensive. Mk II Fusion Engines are acceptable for colony ships or utility ships that face a low probability of destruction but for warships they result in a big production commitment to get mediocre mobility that will outpace any screening escorts. No more SRPs and no Cordellium created an unexpected quandary.
hobknob
And thus is demonstrated one of the pitfalls of technology selection. While a broadbased approach may net you greater results in the long term, you can be left vulnerable to unexpected hostile intent in the short term. One can never know when the enemy will appear. Some decisions the reserachers make are based on the expediency of the situation and may have little long term benefit or may even detract from long term goals. On the other hand, you have to survive the short term to get a shot at the long term.

By the way, this is a very nice thread Collectors. It is thought provoking and entertaining.
TheCollectors
Although advanced military systems were in development when first contact was made with the Fury, there had been absolutely nothing in the current inventory. The only items then available were surplus parts from a Bastion class surface fortress that had been ordered scrapped. These components were hurriedly used to create five Destroyers and immediately send to the point of contact. NUD: Starship, Grey Imp, L, Mk IV Jump Survey Sensor, 1, 10cm Autocannon, 300, Standard Hull Plate, 30000, Mk II Nuclear Engine, 5, Fuel Tankage, 2500, Mk II Nuclear Jump Drive, 1 The Naval Unit Design Review Board confers with various Imperial Naval Architects, concludes that this design is acceptable, and forwards it to a formal INA Board Review for final approval (accepted and filed as an active design) These five ships would go on to be among the most celebrated in Collector history, and proved once and for all that size by itself really does not matter. Cycle 22: The Fury’s immediately response was to build more substantial transwarp capable ships to breach the feeble Pathfinder blockade. Two Collector Seeker II (Medium Auxiliary - 161,354 tons) ships were seen passing from Shelah through Kostis and into Kolovei on a single turn. They attempted to once again survey the near Kolvei warp point. The Seeker IIs did not have an aggressive ROE when they passed through the forward systems though. In those systems there were three small fleets totaling eight mappers that were left unmolested to continue to move forward and search back toward the source of the Fury ships. The naming convention of the “Collector” Seeker II and the observation of their route indicated that these were new ships that were coming through Shelah. Onward. Cycle 24-26: Over the next three cycles more Seeker IIs are seen. One passes through Shelah into Medora. That eliminates one of the warp points in Shelah as the source of the Fury. Mapping has progressed as far as Tera where another Seeker II is sighted. That one continues on to Kostis. Having apparently learned the lesson about bypassing unarmed mappers, these Seekers are now on ZULU orders and five of the eight ships spared earlier are now destroyed. The information that they have collected in the meantime is vital. In Kostis the Grey Imps have moved forward and meet the encroaching Seeking II at the near warp point. This Seeker is the third to be destroyed and the four Grey Imps with their ragged escort continue forward. I, Gjor'haan, called as a disciple of Gjo'jaol, Darkness of Darkness, and Shor'ha, his servant; to The Fledgling Galactic Senate and to the Collectors, to those that have been sanctified in Darkness, disciples by calling, with all who in every place call upon Gjo'jaol for strength, yield the following: We decline the Senate, and any pseudo or anti rhetoric that will undoubtedly follow. Our politics are simpler than yours: all those who deny Gjo’jaol’s salvation are condemned. Behold yet another unsolicited prophecy and Supreme ‘Observation.‘ The Cauldron of non-believers still stews with blood, but now with a greener shade. I also foresaw that the Snake-Dog of Kob'rja would seek a new host, and in its meddling has severed an ancient trust. Blood cannot be covered with sugar. I won’t linger here and exercise my lungs much further: a select few of you have me bested in that regard. We have the meddlesome Collectors to collect. Reckoning is at hand…a hundred-thousand motes will cloud the home sun and thunder will steal your children into the void. Seek me, Collector? Look within. I will fill your ineptitude with the glory of Gjo’jaol!

TheCollectors
Cycle 33: A swarm of approximately thirty Collector mapping ships have already scattered down every available warp route. With each passing cycle the globe of explored space expands outward. Seeker IIs are seen in numerous locations and a handful of the Collector’s Nebula Springers are lost. But each contact gives another clue as to the whereabouts of the Fury. I, Gjor'haan, called as a disciple of Gjo'jaol, Darkness of Darkness, and Shor'ha, his servant; to The Collectors, to those that have been sanctified in Darkness, disciples by calling, with all who in every place call upon Gjo'jaol for strength, yield the following: Souls evicted from the lifeless hulls of Springers, now mute. Pile your treasures, already lost, despite the sentry. Kolovei to be gathered. A Golden Acorn sown for Gjo'jaol. Tribute without penance. Unforgiven. Words to felines, unworthy of their color, and a dishonor to the lives I have taken. And the feline submits with dripping apology! Behold the final levy. Collect your Gods. But with the destruction of the three Seeker IIs by the Grey Imps, the direct path forward is now open. Shelah to Tera to Wilna and then finally Chadwik. Three Grey Imps continue on this the most likely path while the fourth is sent down another route tasked with destroying smaller Fury vessels. Five of these ships have now have fallen and the Fury is farther than before from the Collection. With the emphasis on exploration to locate the Fury, two other empires have now been located; the Bon Bon Kings and the Gosht-Kohr. The Bon Bon Kings immediately agrees to “cater” to the Collector’s every request, while the Gosht-Kohr prove to be somewhat more independently majestic in nature. Survey teams discover a Gosht-Kohr colony route and quick calculations based on lifesupport tonnage ratios indicate a lifeform size of GIANT. With no room in the Collection to house such a race, a perimeter is created around the Gosht-Kohr wildlife reserve and plans are made to establish covert viewing platforms. There are few things quite as grand as a sentient giant cat pouncing in its native habitat. The Fury too is finding these mutual neighbors and in its own special way conducting diplomacy: I, Gjor'haan, called as a disciple of Gjo'jaol, Darkness of Darkness, and Shor'ha, his servant; to The Gosht Kohr and The Collectors , to those that have been sanctified in Darkness, disciples by calling, with all who in every place call upon Gjo'jaol for strength, yield the following: To respond to the submissive Ghost Kohr: We encourage peace between all of those who seek Gjo'jaol for salvation. We ignore those who are peripheral to the Great Divinity, who will have little or no bearing on the Final Hour. We warn those and their allies who choose to stand against us. Gjor'haan is the name of the Divine Prophet who is the conduit between Gjo'jaol and our people. We are Th'raa. The ancient slave race since freed from alien captors, and now we seek vengeance against those who oppose our God. To The Collectors- Woe to you, Collectors and allies, hypocrites! for you tithe your people with futile sacrifice, and have neglected Gjo'jaol, justice, mercy and faith; these you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. Indeed, under Gjo'jaol almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness for you. You will need much more than your current excuse of a command cruiser to win the Divine Favor of Gjo'jaol. The prophet Gjor'haan can only be usurped by great strength, and from one who has the Gift of Sight. The Clan Eldress calls you secretive. We call you cowardly and unwise. Prophecy dictates you will continue with your current actions. This we call suicide. Even our most reverent worshippers have abandoned their prayers for you now. I, Gjor'haan, called as a disciple of Gjo'jaol, Darkness of Darkness, and Shor'ha, his servant; to The Bon-Bon Kings , to those that have been sanctified in Darkness, disciples by calling, with all who in every place call upon Gjo'jaol for strength, yield the following: Is it an Ernst we should direct correspondence to as an ambassador to the empire known as the "Bon-Bon Kings"? Surely a reference to "cream filled centers" is an invitation to dialogue, and we can think of no other race that more closely fits the innuendo. We give but one warning to those who encounter the physical embodiment of Gjo'jaol through our vessels. The mindless slaughter of our exploration vessel by your "Pie Fighter" Strike Cruiser was a necessary event in the Unfolding. The sacrifice took place several systems away from our most forward colony, but take heed. Our engine technology is superior to yours and we have no reservations in eliminating the offending fleet if we find that you do not prove yourself worthy of Gjo'jaol's salvation. Our greatest concern is that you suffer an obvious sin: Gluttony. Sh'la, the prophet once said of gluttony: "If one overeats, not from desire of food, but necessity, this pertains, not to gluttony, but to inexperienced eating habits. A Glutton knowingly overeats, from a desire for the pleasures of the palate. This is a sin in the eyes of Gjo'jaol." If we see signs that you wish to seek Gjo'jaol as a counselor to change your gluttonous ways, we might show future mercy upon you and overlook your irresponsible activities. The warp point is size 51 so by the second turn all ships are fully engaged. Fortunately the loss of the Command Cruiser is of little concern as The Gilded Cage is not far behind. Finally, this is a real warship: The GILDED CAGE class AUXF, a 7,500,000 ton Fleet Auxiliary assigned to formation B (Battle Line) Construction Cost: 300 Mk II Computer System, 200 Mk I Medium Range Sensor, 1 Mk IV Jump Survey Sensor, 425,000 Energy Dispersion Armor Coating, 2,000,000 Selenite Battle Weave, 10,000 Mk III Force Shield, 5,500 Light Shaker Beam, 500 Light Sonic Disruptor, 20 Fighter Bay, 5,000 Cargo Bay, 100 Fuel Shuttle, 480,000 Fuel Tankage, 15,000 Mk II Fusion Engine, 1 Nuclear Transwarp Drive But this design’s greatest foe is obsolescence. At the time of construction other vital techs are advancing rapidly; Light Phase Shakers, Cordellium Composite and Mk IV Force Shields are half researched, and Battle Imaging and Laser Communications are in the final stages. Hurried to the front line there are no escorts to accompany it. And there is no time to wait as the Fury’s Risen II design has revealed that they already have Cordellium Composite in production. Cycle 38: Once the Gilded Cage is completed and well on it’s way forward, two follow-on ships are built to augment it as much as possible. Both are severely limited in Integrity rating as Cordellium Composite has yet to come online. All remaining production is directed towards a troop transport and army divisions. The SQUIRREL NEST class CVA, a 2,000,000 ton Attack Carrier assigned to formation V (Carrier) ..... Construction Cost: 70 Fighter Bay, 250 Mk I Standoff Missile, 2,000 Laser Communications Gear, 1,750 Battle Imaging System, 1 Mk IV Jump Survey Sensor, 300 Mk III Force Shield, 50,000 Selenite Battle Weave, 15,000 Energy Dispersion Armor Coating, 300,000 Fuel Tankage, 4,000 Mk II Fusion Engine, 1 Nuclear Transwarp Drive The NUT HUSKER class SC, a 1,600,000 ton Star Cruiser assigned to formation H (Heavy Screen) ..... Construction Cost: 3,000 Light Shaker Beam, 400 Mk III Force Shield, 20,000 Energy Dispersion Armor Coating, 225,000 Selenite Battle Weave, 30,000 Fuel Tankage, 3,600 Mk II Fusion Engine, 1 Nuclear Transwarp Drive Admiral <needs name> given command of the fleet explains that he would have preferred all three ships be combined into a single hull, but he only suggests this in private out of earshot of the bean counters in charge of the production queues. He also laments the fact that the aging Selenite Battle Weave is used instead of the new Cordellium Composite undergoing final testing in the research labs. It is unfortunate that such a brilliant mind will soon be lost in the First Battle of Chadwik.

TheCollectors
Cycle 40: The Risen II warps into Shelah expecting an opening only to find the Gilded Cage blocking the warp point. The attacking fleet is swept out of the way. Cycle 41: This time the nine Shorja Sentry inside Chadwik are little hinderance. The Nut Husker and the Squirrel Nest arrive and link up with the Gilded Cage. The Menagerie prepares to sweep through the system. Cycle 42: Chadwik 8 has a small surface fortress and an explorer. Very heavily screened and backed up by a million-ton Base Station, one Star Cruiser, a Battle Cruiser and a bevy of Assault Corvettes and other support ships, the Fury defenses were nothing to laugh at. They boasted several thousand Strike Fighters of their own and were commanded by the venerable Grand Admiral Prestor Hahn, an experienced leader and veteran of countless skirmishes over his long and storied career. Bombardment Drones and Strike Fighters slipped from their launch racks and swarmed in a cascade of flickering lights. A lone Insight class Surface Outpost pounded away with its 10cm Autocannons while Gjor'haan Frigates and Corvettes stung at the hated enemy ships. The smaller Fury vessels tried desperately to close with the enemy cruisers and use their Light Plasma Hellbores and Gauss Guns to effect, but they were hounded by countless Collectors fighters. There were only three attacking ships in all, but they were awesome in their own right. A single Nut Husker class Star Cruiser and a two million ton Squirrel Nest Attack Carrier flanked the magnificent Gilded Cage, fully 7.5 million tons and bristling with Light Shaker Beams and Light Sonic Disruptors. Heavily armored and boasting ten thousand Mk III Force Shields, the Gilded Cage had already created panic among the Fury populace. It was considered an invulnerable juggernaut of death, an awe-inspiring engine of destruction. And it was pounding away at the Gjor'haan ships, swatting them into oblivion with unstoppable firepower. Grand Admiral Prestor observed in horror as the dreaded Gilded Cage swung about and unloaded everything it had into his beloved Shorja Volley class Battle Cruiser, a ship he had once commanded. The hapless vessel jerked once and then was torn apart into countless flinders of space debris by the mighty Cage's Shaker Beams. Nothing could withstand that beating except for his Shield of Gjojaol II Base Station, and even the Shield was not invincible, though it did pack 500,000 tons of Cordellium Composite armor plating. The enemy carrier died early, followed by the Nut Husker, but there was precious little point defense in the Fury fleet—the Collectors fighters kept coming, gathering about the Gilded Cage like a swarm of locusts. It was a slugfest, a maelstorm of dead and dying ships, all focused on the destruction of the lone Collectors ship. Assault Corvettes, Frigates, even a latearriving three hundred thousand ton Fury transport - all were fed to the great furnace as the Cage swept its Shaker Beams about in a fan of obliteration. The Gjor'haan attacks took their toll, though, and finally their surviving ships began calling out successful strikes against the hulking Cage. Sensing an opening, the Star Cruiser Shorja Battery, miraculously untouched throughout the engagement, moved in to point blank range and unloaded everything it had in a full broadside. Heavy Missiles, torpedoes, lasers and plasma hellbores slammed into the Gilded Cage and finished her with a blinding flash of raw power. Collectors fighters were forced to ditch following the engagement, a victory for the defenders--but at what price? And of course the crazy prophet had something to say on the matter: I, Gjor'haan, called as a disciple of Gjo'jaol, Darkness of Darkness, and Shor'ha, his servant; to The Collectors , to those that have been sanctified in Darkness, disciples by calling, with all who in every place call upon Gjo'jaol for strength, present the following account of ceremony: We gather here to honor our fallen and give praise to Grand Admiral Prester Hahn for his devotion and service to Gjo'jaol. We have survived a fearsome assault with a heavy price. The Collectors have sent sorrow upon us of late, many of our own people sacrificed to the Cauldron. In fact, I see now that Maraj the Devourer had returned, in the form of that behemoth I prophesized long ago. I cannot imagine what this looked like for those of you on the ground. The Guilded Cage was a worthy adversary. It slaughtered many of our pilots this day, most notably our Shorja Volley Battle Cruiser and surface outpost. 1800 Strike fighters. 120 bombardment drones. Heroes were made of each pilot of the 140 plus corvettes lost absorbing the devastation from the Guilded Cage. Our victory is evidence that the divine intervention of Gjo'jaol has manfested himself through the skills of our devout Grand Admiral Prestor Hahn. I honor him with the Sheath of Vaua, most revered artifact of our warrior lineage. To those who call themselves The Collectors, we pray for your dead this day. There is great loss for both sides. We extend you a well-deserved second offering to accept Gjo'jaol as your protector. Can Gjo'jaol's supremacy be denied in this hour?

AKO
Excellent writing (and reading), and fabulous battle. The question is now: will The Fury recover, will the Collectors come again, or will the felines come in and make the final kill? Chadwick 10, hmm, does anyone have a map? General Miles Avatar
Amazin that those battles took place a very long time ago. Close to a year if memory serves. Chances are this thing isnt over yet. We will most likely be entertained by more titanic clashes of giants. If not The Collectors and The Fury then Im sure some other antagonists. TheCollectors
Cycle 43-52: Now what? Rapid expansion of explored space has revealed more empires, some of which are either dormant or under-managed. The easy path would be to add them to the Collection. But turning in that direction somehow feels wrong- not wrong in the taking but in the leaving. Unresolved. So the question becomes not what, but how? The primary lesson to be learned from the Great Battle of Chadwik is immediately apparent; longevity in battle is a requirement for victory. A lag in armor technology had already been realized, but another method to prolong a battle is preventing the targeting of major ships. In Chadwik a significant portion of the Collector firepower was lost early in the battle, while Fury plasma delivery platforms hid behind a couple hundred screening escort. To overcome the advantage of the defender’s ability to build fortresses, radical measures will have to be taken. The first consideration is preliminary conceptual design of the second Cage. Cordellium is finally complete, so it successor Vananite is made the highest priority of the research department with multiple teams working on its advancement. No move will be made until it is ready. This will at least close the gap with the Fury, and if timing is advantageous may even provide a technological advantage. In regards to ordnance, it is decided to completely forgo fighters as they are expendable in a long battle and with the Fury’s ability to field Strike fighters any offensive fighters would be at terrible risk. If Fury devoted any production or research to CIDS or dedicated anti-fighter fighters then it would be wasted efforts. And in a counter to Fury fighters and drones, the second Cage will include advanced Repulsor CIDS to quickly marginalize that firepower. The Gilded Cage had required a large investiture in Mk II Fusion Engines and no successor had been developed. In an attempt to maximize efficiency of the second Cage it would be transwarp capable but have very low maneuverability. This is a gamble considering the Fury’s reliance on drones and fighters so the CIDS gunners will have to do their jobs well. Finally, production queues and shipyard schedules are immediately adjusted to build a fleet of one thousand screens to move into place ahead of the newest Cage… The Cage of Whispers. BB Cage of Whispers (Battleship - 5,598,500 tons) [integrity: 526,774,500] [shields: 2,240,000] 1,250 Battle Imaging System, 5,000 Cargo Bay, 300,000 Energy Dispersion Armor Coating, 50 Fuel Shuttle, 300,000 Fuel Tankage, 1 Fusion Transwarp Drive, 3,565 Light Phase Shaker, 20 Mk I Medium Range Sensor, 4,400 Mk I Repulsor CIDS, 75 Mk II Fusion Engine, 1,400 Mk III Force Shield, 60 Mk III Short Range Sensor, 1 Mk IV Jump Survey Sensor, 3,500,000 Vananite Battle Armor Gravitonic: 12,548,800 Maneuverability: 0.026, Meson Web: 0.535, Phase Inversion: 0.535, Point Defense: 1.571, Reflective Coating: 0.535 Sensors: 0.012, Tachyon Grid: 0.535, Thermal Regulation: 0.535 CO A Thousand Tongues (Corvette - 1,000 tons) [integrity: 380] (Green, Timid) 600 Fuel Tankage, 1 Light Phase Shaker, 1 Mk I Nuclear Jump Drive, 1 Mk II Fusion Engine Gravitonic: 3,520 Maneuverability: 2.000 An order is placed with the Bon Bons for a fleet of similar configuration and objective; no expendables or missile based ordnance and heavy screens. They agree and despite a significant technological disadvantage do their best by building five hundred screens and two Star Cruisers. Meanwhile the Fury is still seeking to convert, even while rebuilding: I, Gjor'haan, called as a disciple of Gjo'jaol, Darkness of Darkness, and Shor'ha, his servant; to Sha'thar the Huntress, the Zend and Bon-Bon Kings , to those that have been sanctified in Darkness, disciples by calling, with all who in every place call upon Gjo'jaol for strength, present the following address: I address you as a collective as you seem allied with the wounded Dro'ja (duck) of the region. We foresee several attempts to breach Chadwik. Be praised the servants of Gjo'jaol are better organized and heavily defended. We await your salvation: 'collectively' or piece-meal. To the rattled Sha'thar: Glades, not politics, are the best grounds for a huntress. Interference in my inevitible conversion of the resource-starved Collectors will only endanger your cubs further. Unlike the Zend or the Bon-Bon Things, I have spared your defenseless colony fleet from destruction. Do not burden your engineers with obsolete designs. I have the ability to reach Nikandr in a single turn, with forces beyond the presage of the Collectors. The wise leader knows whom to seek protection. Have you made the right decision? Gjo'jaol still has an ear for you, Sha'thar, but not even His loftiest servant can predict His patience. To the Zend and Bon-Bon Kings: Had any of you sought Gjo'jaol for guidance, you would have thought to defend your now oblitereated colony vessels. The Zend, in particular, oppress their colonies in the system of Opportune with negligent protection! Opportune indeed, to liberate the innocent from an empire blind to Gjo'jaol's blessed vision. In short, you are all naive to think the failed assault by the Collectors rendered our fleets incapable of enforcing Gjo'jaol's divine command. The Cage of Whispers is still being readied for service so it is fortunate that the Tongues were armed. Another Fury attempt to survey is thwarted, but the shift in tactics to screens has been revealed to the Fury allowing time to adjust. It is also noted that the Fury is using Vananite, not an encouraging discovery. Cycle 59: The Collector fleet is complete and has moved into Fury space undiscovered to link up with the Bon Bon fleet. An outgoing Fury ship is intercepted in Wilna. It is obviously designed to strip away at the Tongues blockade in Kostis but the forward location combined with the presence of the Cage of Whispers could not have been anticipated. The Fury of Gjor'haan # 3397 [blazing Fist Rising From Cauldron Of Blood] Mote Sweeper Force C [ROE: R] *Column Attack* (Fleet Tonnage: 420,500) **DESTROYED** [3rd] CA Mote Sweeper III (Heavy Cruiser - 420,500 tons) [integrity: 15,267,000] (Green, Timid) 1,200 FCS-1 Archer Fire Control, 25,000 Fuel Tankage, 220 Medium Sonic Disruptor, 200 Mk I Flux Capacitor 425 Mk III Fusion Engine, 1 Nuclear Transwarp Drive, 100,000 Vananite Battle Armor Sonic: 387,200 Flux Capacitance: 0.237, Maneuverability: 4.042 Another troubling sign is the availability of FCS-1 Archer systems. That single Fury ship has a fire control rating of 57. Meanwhile it is realized that once combined the 13,681,560 tons of Collector and Bon Bon shipping have a fire control rating of just 1. Cycle 60: The fleets now move across Wilna and into Chadwik. Only two small pickets guard the warp point. The homesystem of the Fury is breeched for the second time. Soon after the warp point is secured, a second Mote Sweeper Force C is detected moving from within the system and it is destroyed. If the Sweeper had been in place prior to the warp assault it could have been disastrous for the screens as they squeezed through the warp point. Instead, the entire assault force is safely in position to attack Chadwick 10. The order of battle is as follows: Collector’s- Tower of Babble: 1x Cage of Whispers 951x A Thousand Tongues 1x Thirty Fangs (troop transport) Bon Bon Kings: 2x Crème Burner (Star Cruiser - 1,578,300 tons) 493x Ant (Corvette – 2,000 tons) 1x Big Dipper (tanker) 1x Buffet (troop transport) The defenses over Chadwik 10 are unknown. The prudent option is to next move in a single screen to scout out the defenses. Of course at this point there is nothing that that information can change other than to turn around the attacking fleets. Would that be a satisfying end to this operation?
