Hellenic Warp Points Fall!

Actually I just discovered that the engine cant handle really big transfers, I had 15 billion (15,000,000,000) materials I needed to transfer did a TR order via the TC and then via the Universal Gate only to discover that only 2 billion (2,000,000,000) of the materials had gone through. Apparently the TR system cant handle bigger numbers than that so you need to do the same thing over and over within the TR to ensure that you get the stuff across

Probably can't handle. For MS Access, and Long Integer defined field can only handle values from –2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,642. My bet is the amount field is defined as a Long Integer someplace in the transfer process, maybe even in the order processing piece. So you enter 15 Billion on screen, and behind the scenes in processing only a portion of that gets moved as MS Access loses the higer order bits.

Maybe these were your losses you saw using TR between normal Transportation Centers on a World with a Universal Gate?

 

No, those were unrelated and not in that scale, havent happened since I wrote Pete about it though so I guess he found it and squashed it :blink:

1. The Combat Engine is flawed. Specifically, it cannot handle battles with large numbers of combatants. Right now, that strain is coming from "useless" screen ships - small (1000-2000 ton) vessels - that are mass produced by the thousands by the more established empires. However, as these same older Empires gain technologies which improve resource gathering and industrial output, they can start to build similar quantities of larger - say 50k-100k ton - vessels, which would be harder to dismiss as "useless". (I could add as a corollary - what exactly am I to do with all of the "low-end" weaponry that I built back when they were "state-of-the-art" such as 10cm Autocannons?)

 

I don't know if you can say the combat engine is flawed. It seems to work. But it takes a long time to run through a battle involving large numbers of ships. And it uses a lot of memory to do so. Imagine two fleets, eacy with 20,000 ships, and a 100 fire rating. Each round of combat, for each side, it has to do this 200 times: Select an opposing ship, select again and if a better target aim there, determine the glob of damage based on defenses and distance, record damage to the ship, record if destroyed .. repeat. Once a combat round is complete, calc out changes in fire power and fire control, repeat sequence. Somewhere in here it tosses in CIDS effect on missles/fighters as well. The computer will have to process all of these instructions over and over at least 40,000 times. At in every step it's calling on other database objects and tables to work out formulas and hit percentages. All the IO, page reads, etcetera.. add up and really slow the process down. MS Access is famous for not freeing up the memory pages as it processes in the tables. So the database size keeps going up as data is updated, with the older space not deleted or removed until a compress is run. This can also lead to thrashing where the product keeps processing huge chunks of data into and out of storage, just to process one small piece of data.

 

If anything I would say the technology used in the program is not up to the demands the game is placing on it.

Or a limitation not to swell the database? Anyways, as for the latest snafu, Pete has promised to correct all the errors that occured due to the wormhole coding error. So have sent the list and hoping everything works out, would be nice (both for me and Pete) to have a turn where I didnt have to email him directly after I receive the turn...

The data base will continue to be the problem , even if the flag bridge nullifies the effect of the screens . New empires are being added to the game all the time , and even if a couple of hundred thousand screens are dismantled , the fix of screens being dismantled is only temporary at best . Believe it or not , I can believe that somebody who has built untold thousands of screens for several years in the game might be upset that after a couple of years the screens might destroy the game . Blasphemy and a pox on the person that has the gall to suggest that those screens need to disappear .

At the same time , this game has been going on now since before I left from Germany....I had submitted a setup and sent money to Russ to be in the original core group....for some reason , RTG cashed my check but somehow lost my setup info...ask Russ , he would probably verify this...RTG did , after several years , refund me the money back from the check that was cashed , and apologized . If I read things right , things that were supposed to have been included as the game as the game progressed , seem to have been forgotten....and quite truthfully , probably never will happen . Religion , spies , the list goes on . What I do think though , is that if we pay to play a game , then we should also be able to expect , at least to some degree , that the problems in the game get addressed , and also eventually the game gets finished . I don't honestly believe that this is happening , so I am blunt in what I say .

I actually like this game quite a lot . There is no other game left like this game . I have been playing pbm games since the middle '80's . Finished , this game would be so awesome . If it takes someone to be an asshole to get some movement in the game , and maybe then Pete finishes and fixes the rest , heck , I have no problem in being that person . I don't see anyone else complaining about obvious problems . I saw Locklyn often complaining when I read through the old posts , but I think he has pretty much given up....which is a pity . His postings since I have been in the game have been pretty mild , and recently , it seems he has had thoughts of no longer playing once his current campaign is over...losing players like that is eventually the death to a pbm game like this one .

Here is the result of the Flag Bridge battle. I destroyed almost ratio of 3 to 1 of tonnage and damaged a lot of his heavies. It would seem Flag Bridges work exactly as promished which means I can now bring all of the Allied Fleets down on his HW in time for Xmas! Guess what Santa brings for Xmas!?....Yes thats right boys and girls, a vast alien armada over your home world!!! YAY!!

 

Not had that much time to analyze the combat. If you have any comments feel free to post them, but as apparent, Flag Bridges seem to be the Screen Killers they promised to be especially if only one side has the Flag Bridge ;)

Here is the result of the Flag Bridge battle. I destroyed almost ratio of 3 to 1 of tonnage and damaged a lot of his heavies. It would seem Flag Bridges work exactly as promished which means I can now bring all of the Allied Fleets down on his HW in time for Xmas! Guess what Santa brings for Xmas!?....Yes thats right boys and girls, a vast alien armada over your home world!!! YAY!!

 

Not had that much time to analyze the combat. If you have any comments feel free to post them, but as apparent, Flag Bridges seem to be the Screen Killers they promised to be especially if only one side has the Flag Bridge ;)

The 75,000+ Speed bump screens were NOT fired at once. Zip. Zilch. There effectiveness in battle was totally negated. The Speed Bump and Probe class ships have no weapons .. so they were ignored! Wonderful! Any ships without weapons get ignored using a Mk I Flag Bridge, meaning all such items are now useless in any battle. This is backed up as all the other non-weapon ships in orbit like freighters were also ignored. Talk about proper threat assessment.

 

As to the remaining screenies, yes you did fire on them. But they had weapons (allright, CID defenses only .. but they were shooting something so I'll call it a "weapon"). But despite their positions and numbers (around 35,000), the fleet still hit the other installations far more often than would have happened in the past. Out of the 161 Capital installions you destoyed 20, and Crippled/Heavy/Medium damaged another 10 or so. In the meantime they had no such bridge and kept firing on your screens, allowing you to keep blasting installation after installation.

 

Devestating is the best way to describe this tech advance over any empire that lacks it. YOU can still build screens and protect your capital ships. Their protection is much more limited as the screens still absorb some damage (as long as they have "weapons" to draw some fire), but not as much as before.

What happens if every ship you put up into the air has weapons , however minor? My ship designs have always had at least one weapon that fires back.....then we could be right back at building screens , but every screen has a light laser or some such inconsequential weapon...back to more testing , looks like to me.......next question would be that maybe the flag bridge can see the mass of the opponent , and then see if the ship is really a threat.......the questions left unanswered........

It appears from this that even screens with weapons / CIDS are less effective than before. Oh, still useful as you can see from the results. But I estimate around 15-20% of Locklyn's fire bypassed the screens and hit the ground forts. While without the bridge maybe around 1-2% of the shots would have gotten to the ground (just counting the 35,000 or so with CIDS).

 

So your right, people will just build ships with weapons on them (there are several nice weapons below 1000 tons in size in the Excellent+ firepower range, just perfect for mounting on a screen). Why? Well, even if the screens are less effective, they still cut the firepower reaching to big guns by (in this case) 80%. And that is the purpose of the screen. Draw fire away from the big guns. And nothing here shoudl dissuade anyone from building more screens.

 

As a matter of fact, there are several nice weapons below 1000 tons in size in the Excellent+ firepower range, just perfect for mounting on a screen. Heck, put a couple weapons, some high end computers to add Fire Control, some CIDS, and Armor into a nice little package, and you could create a screenie that could dish out some serious offense themselves. Maybe even building nothing but screens would work now! Just imagine, instead of some 1,000,000,000 ton fort on the surface, you instead have 500,000 screens of 2000 tons each, dishing out around 6 billion in damage per round with fire control in the low hundreds. Flag bridge couldn't touch that, could it.

I think that just like everything in Supernova, Flag Bridge has it's place but isn't a magic bullet that will solve all combat issues. Used against unarmed screens, it appears to be quite effective. Against minimally armed screens or screens armed with maximum level tech, perhaps it will behave differently. This is a initial trial and it seemed to have done what it was supposed to do, but there's probably clever ways to circumvent it too.

 

My preference has been and will be large well armed and well shielded ships as a counter to most threats, with auxiliary ships as required.
